Introduction–What was going on? My motherly instinct was to console, but I also realized this was a defeat before she even left the area. The 4th of July event was going to happen. With or without this individual. It needed to happen with her and with a different attitude. Here’s how it started.
As I opened the door and started to exit the restroom, I saw a rifle being slung into the corner. The rifle itself ricocheted from that corner into my path, stopping my progress. I knew better than to pick it up and waited for the uniformed person to pick it up. She kicked it out of my way, then mumbled, “Sorry,” and followed it into the corner, where she slumped dejectedly, drew up one knee, then leaned forward to hide her face in her crooked right arm.
I decided I needed to “attack” in the only way I knew how. I made sure my posture was one of authority and started speaking to this individual. “First of all, that is no way to treat a rifle. It is a weapon and you need to be aware of that at all times. If it were loaded, it could have gone off and injured anyone. That is your responsibility. Act like it! Second, I already know what defeat feels like. I never served, but the world will not exclude you from feeling that. You need to get over it, as they say. I did. If I can, at 75, then you can at your young age.”
Continuing the One-sided Conversation
“Whatever your problem, you have let it defeat you. The solution may not be one that you can control. It may be someone else’s responsibility and you need to realize that. Whatever action you do or do not take will determine the outcome. THAT is your responsibility today, the 4th of July.”
She barely looked up, smoldering with shame.
“In fact, I am going to address your behavior with your rifle. Responsibility for the use and care of the rifle is necessary whenever you have a weapon. You have learned more about that rifle than I know, but what I do know is that you don’t throw it in a corner and then kick it. It’s a good thing I am not your commanding officer. But, I am going to act in a similar manner, because I do know about rifles from personal experience.”
“My experience was picking up a loaded rifle. But, I didn’t know and didn’t know how to check. I had it in firing position. I never touched the trigger.”
“The owner came in as I placed it back in the corner and he stated, “I am glad you didn’t pull the trigger. I had left it loaded and that was a mistake. Thank you for putting it back.” Now, I don’t pick up a gun without knowing if it is loaded or not.”
The Loaded Question
So, my question to you, “Is it loaded?” She picked up the rifle.
“No,” came the muffled reply.
“I assume you feel like you’ve failed at something today. That feeling doesn’t go away on its own. The answer is for you to work through it, not around it. Six months from now, you’ll look back and see you got past it.”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” came the almost belligerent statement.
Retort to Her Statement
“Oh, yes, I do,” was my heated reply. “The opportunity to serve was never within my grasp due to my vision problem. In addition, my own niece was in the Marines and my grandson is in the Air Force. They were willing to serve and be in the forces.”
“But, I decided that my niece needed my emotional support and the only way I could do that was to write. Later, she told me that it had made a difference. Today, I am here to support everyone in the forces, including you.”
She sat up straighter as I continued to talk.
“My support doesn’t erase failure. Everyone struggles. My niece struggled through boot camp. My grandson studied hard to be upgraded in rank.” I looked toward the main celebration area.
“That’s why I am here today for the 4th of July celebration.” I turned back around and asked, “Now, why are you in this corner on the 4th of July?”
Standing Again
“I’m not.” She was holding her rifle, uniform straight, standing.
A small smile crossed her face. I returned the smile and said, “Thank you. I support you by being here for all of you who serve. Thank you for your service. Go enjoy the 4th of July.”
I gave her a hug and left to return to my seat. I knew I had made a difference for one person on this 4th of July. Mission accomplished.
