March Women’s History Month 29-30: Down Under Transplant
March 29 was Elle Macpherson’s birthday in 1964. She is an Australian supermodel, businesswoman, philanthropist and television host. She has two businesses. The first being “The Body” (also her nickname from Time magazine) which is a line of skin care products. The second is Elle Mcpherson Intimate. She holds positions of founder, primary model and creative director for each business. In addition to these two businesses, she was both host and Executive Producer for Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model program from 2010 to 2013.
She had chosen to go to law school, so came to the U.S. to work and pay for her law books in this way. From a T. V. commercial for TAB (soda), she received the moniker as “the girl next door.” Therefore, the 1980’s was her journey of recognition with 15 different magazines either on the cover or displayed on their pages. In addition, she graced five record appearances on the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues. A business licensing agreement (1989) between Bendon Limited Apparel and Macpherson was a partnership that was the first of its type since the apparel carried her name and designs.
Films–Support and Lead Roles
Not only was she active with modeling, she found her talent in films and television. Her film opportunities were in both supporting and lead roles. The supporting roles (1990’s) were in Sirens, The Mirror Has Two Faces, and Batman and Robin (Julie Madison role). Later in 1997, she was in The Edge, which was followed by South Kensington in 2001. Meanwhile, she played a re-occurring role in the T.V. show, Friends.
Four Major Awards
In 2005, Glamour magazine awarded her “Entrepreneur of the Year.” The next award in 2007 came in the form of an Everywoman Ambassador Award which acknowledged her success as a businesswoman. Underfashion Club’s Femmy Awards identified her as the Lingerie Designer of the Year in 2008. One additional award came in 2009 from the Women’s World Awards with their presentation of a World Career Award.
March Women’s History Month 29-30: The North Transplant
Celine Dion from Canada, was born on March 30, 1968. She is referred to as the “Queen of Power Ballads.” Her musical skill is in classical music, R and B, gospel, pop and rock. Besides English and French, she has sung ballads in six other languages. Her talent was discovered when she was only 14 years old. The international breakthrough for her came with a duet with Peabo Bryson. They sang the title track of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. In the 1990’s, she moved seamlessly between her first language of French and her learned language of English as well as producing many albums and singles.
By 1993, she achieved global stardom with Unison (pop) and the hit “My Heart Will Go On,” along with “The Colour of My Love.” Continuing her trail of certified diamond albums in the English language included international #1 hits such as: “The Power of Love,” “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” and, of course, “My Heart Will Go On.” A prolific French artist, some of her productions include: “D’eux,” (1995); “S’il suffisait d’aimer,” (1998); “Sans attendre” (2012) and “Encore un soir” (2016).
From 2003-2007, the Las Vegas Strip was hers. 2009 saw her rise to the top-earning artist of the decade from the combined album sales and her concert revenues (747 million). These two combined categories catapulted her into the best-selling French language artist and the best-selling musical artist of all time. In musical lists, the numbers of 1 through 6 usually had her name following those numbers, too. She also received two Honorary Doctorates in Music degrees. Forbes magazine agreed that she was the top-earning female artist in both 1990’s and 2000’s decades.
Love, Life, Business
Her husband’s poor health caused her to postpone business activities in August, 2014. By 2015, she had returned to her career for a short duration. 2016 saw the “top of the chart” song, Encore un soir. She produced one more album, “Courage,” which gave her another #1 album for each of the last three decades.
Both French and English languages have reinforced her visionary dream of a super star. Many countries were influenced by her charity and generosity of spirit and giving, too. Her influence and success has encouraged other singers to strive for the level of stardom she has exemplified. Patti LaBelle (Godmother of Soul) called Dion one of the greatest singers ever. Dion has a Guinness World Record for the Juno Awards in the category of Album of the Year. Surely her legacy could be expressed in her signature song, “My Heart Will Go On.”
