Clothing and Apparel. Body coverings and adornment of both body (paints and tattoos) and clothing are apparent in many cultures and environment. Cold requires a different type of clothing than a more moderate temperature climate. The simple clothes (capes, cloaks) were sewn for the moderate temperatures. History shows that Northern China progressed from blade tools (40,000 years ago), then to bone awls from 5,000 years later and an eyed needle just 10,000 years later. In the cold climate, they manufactured a “punchboard” for punching holes through hide at predetermined positions for their tailored clothing and to keep warm. It predated by 15,000 years eyed needles in Western Europe. Eyed needles were necessary for the next layer of clothing–the first underwear.
